Burstadiet

På webben går det att hitta en hel del bloggar om teologi och diskussionforum om teologi. Några av dem som finns på dessa bloggar argumenterar för kalvinism på ett sätt som antyder att de är i det så kallade burstadiet. De har nyss funnit en övertygelse som påverkar dem så starkt så att de känner ett enormt behov av att argumentera argsint med dem som inte har exakt samma övertygelse. Michael Spencer skriver:

"A lot of new and ignorant Calvinists need to...well, shut up. I know that isn't the politest phrase in the book, but it is the truth. Most of the damage done in these matters is done by people who are in what Calvinists call the "cage phase," those inaugural few months when you know very little except some version of TULIP and you won't be quiet about that. These are people who need to get a very large stack of books and get some roots going, but instead they go and pick a fight with whoever is least likely to understand what they are talking about. These converts- often impressionable students or very unread laity- can be obnoxious, immature and thoughtless in their assaults. They've done a lot of damage and there is no apologizing for them. I would say they should be recognized for what they are- untaught, ignorant, and often, young. Most them will grow out of it. A few remain that way until their next phase."

Vad gör man då om man är ung och har upptäckt en teologi som man verkligen brinner för och se bekräftad i Bibeln? I inlägget "Quick-and-Dirty Calvinism" ger Phil Johnson följande råd.

"my advice to young Calvinists is to learn your theology from the historic mainstream Calvinist authors, not from blogs and discussion forums on the Internet. Some of the forums may be helpful in pointing you to more important resources. But if you think of them as a surrogate for seminary, you're probably going to become an ugly Calvinist—and if you get hit in the face with a rotten egg, you probably deserve it."

Phil Johnson säger även att:

"The best Calvinism has always been fervently evangelistic, large-hearted, benevolent, merciful, and forgiving. After all, that's what the doctrines of grace are supposed to be all about."

Vad gäller då om man upptäcker 1861 års baptistbekännelse och ser att det finns mycket att lära av den även idag? Jag tror inte att lösningen är att vara argsint och börja anklaga andra kristna hit och dit för ditt och datt. Snarast är det att ge en positiv beskrivning av det man är övertygad om. Att inse att tiden har förändrats och att man kan ha fel ibland. Se att Gud verkar också i dem som har en annan övertygelse. Vara ödmjuk men samtidigt stå upp för det man tror är sant. Utforska de historiska omständigheterna för bekännelsen och sätta den i sitt historiska sammanhang. Inse att en bekännelse aldrig är mer än en sammanfattning av vad Bibeln lär. Tiden tog inte slut 1861. Vara med i en gemenskap där man lär av varandra. Se hur man kan tjäna där man står. Vad kan jag göra för andra kristna idag? Vad kan jag göra för de små i min stad idag? Vad kan jag göra för att nå ut med evangelium idag? Lära av trygga erfarna kristna.
